Summer squash is a prolific producer. I believe every serious gardener with enough space should have a few plants of a summer squash variety. We grow both yellow squash and zucchini. Yellow squash is my favorite squash variety. I like its flavor and production. In 2012 I had six plants that over the course of the summer produced 52 lbs. Frankly, given the space I provided the plants (8’ x 8’), my yellow squash was the best producer. With this much food produced I (meaning my wife and I) needed to either give away excess or begin eating a lot of squash. We probably gave away about 25% of our squash crop the rest we kept.
